THE STORY
Local baseball legend, Glen Gorbous, has always been famous for his cannon of an arm. He played in the valley’s amateur league with the Rosedale Midways, but by 1955, the Brooklyn Dodgers came calling and he left the coal fields for a career in the big leagues. “Longball,” as they dubbed him, went on to play forthe Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies. In 1957, he launched a Guinness World Record-breaking throw—445 feet, 10 inches—a record that still stands today. Glen celebrated the only way that made sense: dropping his $200 prize money on beer for the team.
